A well-cared-for silk saree can genuinely last a lifetime - and be passed on to the next generation. Here's how to protect that investment.
Storage
Store silk sarees folded in a soft muslin or cotton cloth, never in plastic, which traps moisture and can cause the zari to tarnish. Refold along different lines every few months to avoid permanent creasing.
Cleaning
Always dry clean silk sarees, especially those with zari or embroidery work. Spot-clean minor stains immediately rather than waiting, and always inform your dry cleaner about any delicate embellishments.
Ironing
Iron on the reverse side at a low, silk-appropriate setting, and avoid direct heat contact with zari borders.
Sunlight & Humidity
Keep stored sarees away from direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes, and away from humid areas, which encourage fabric degradation over time.
